Celebrates
National Nursing Home Week

by: Bobby McDonald

For some 18 residents of the Sulphur Springs Health and Rehab Center, in Sulphur Springs, Wednesday was a celebration and picnic in Buford Park. Lea Netta Pryor, Activity Director for the center, along with other members of her staff, planned the day for residents, to allow them the opportunity to leave the local facility and enjoy the warm sunshine, beautiful weather, and great outdoors.

"This is a great experience, when you've been inside for a lengthy stay," expressed nursing home resident, Norma Haberlin. "It's just a 'breath of fresh air' and a chance to get out and stretch your legs in the sunshine!"

as an observance of National Nursing Home Week.

Residents were playing dominoes beneath the shade trees and had music playing, while they contemplated a softball game and bingo, after a picnic lunch at the noon hour.

"This is National Nursing Home Week, and we have tried to observe something each day at the home," expressed Pryor. "We've had Yellow Dress-up Day on Monday, and Hawaiian Dress-up Day on Tuesday. Then, we have plans for a 50's Dress-up Day tomorrow and a Western Day on Friday!"

The week's activities at Sulphur Springs Health and Rehab Center will end with a family picnic, where family members will come for a cookout on the lawn of the center. Then, entertainment will be provided by the "Campfire Cowboys."

"The residents of the home are just like anyone else, they need excitement and variety in their lives, and the more active that we can keep everyone, the better they are mentally and physically," expressed Pryor. "It's just a matter of planning activities that everyone can participate in and being creative and fun with those things planned!"

If the smiles on the faces of residents were any indication, the picnic in the park, along with the other activities in Buford Park, was definitely a WINNER!!!!
