Independence Concert Attracts
Large Crowd On Square
by: Bobby McDonald

Flags waved in the breeze and Hopkins County residents sat in lawn chairs and visited with their neighbors, as the Independence Day Concert and annual fireworks show unfolded on the downtown Square, Saturday night. A large crowd gathered for the opening of the concert that began at 7:45 p.m. and supplied them with classical tunes, in a variety of venues, until the fireworks show began at dark.
Tom Stewart, President of the Sulphur Springs Symphony League, welcomed the crowd to the event and introduced a variety of guests to Saturday night's performance. Tom Sellers, President of Alliance Bank, the major underwriter of the event, welcomed everyone and expressed how happy the Bank and its staff were to continue the 15 year support of the annual concert and fireworks show, that celebrates our nation's independence.
The Hopkins County Military Coalition led the march of the veterans and posted the colors for Saturday night's event, and tunes such as Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA," John Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever," and Irvin Berlin's popular "God Bless America" were included with Andrew Loyd Weber's "The Phantom of the Opera" and Custer's "Star Trek Through the Years." Duke Ellington's "Highlights from 'Sophisticated Ladies'" joined the "Armed Forces Salute" on Saturday night's billing.
