"A Rite of Passage"
Sulphur Springs' 8th Grade Banquet

by: Bobby McDonald

Many of you may have noticed the long limos "crawling" through Sulphur Springs on Saturday night. They were transporting those in the 8th Grade at Sulphur Springs Middle School to the traditional 8th Grade Banquet, a "rite of passage" for all those students who attend school in Sulphur Springs. The annual event was hosted in the Middle School Gym and featured a theme of " In The Deep Blue Sea."

Can you remember back in "The Dark Ages" when you dressed up in your best "duds" and made your way to your own 8th Grade Banquet? It was a time of passage into your high school years and one of the first boy-girl social events of your adolescent years. It was the first "formal" event and featured wearing a prom dress, if you were a girl, and wearing a coat and tie, if you were male.

Today, the 8th Grade Banquet has evolved into a more formal event and features many of the male students renting tuxedoes and dressing up for the occasion, more than in years past. Then, there is the renting of the limo, with your buddies, and taking the girls to eat in Dallas, Paris, Greenville, or some other distant town for the evening.

Students return to the Middle School and attend an awards program, where the top students are recognized for their achievements, and the traditional dance is conducted in the gymnasium. This year's 8th Grade Banquet was catered by Gilda Landers and carried out the theme with fruits, chocolate dipped strawberries, and a host of other finger foods.
