Cumby Pays Tribute
On Memorial Day

by: Bobby McDonald

While many people in Hopkins County spent their Memorial Day holiday, on Monday, at the lake or grilling in the back yard, residents of Cumby paid tribute to those who founded their community, at the annual Cumby Cemetery Memorial Day Service.
The service was conducted at the Cumby Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. and brought a number of present and former residents back to the western Hopkins County community.

Flags were flown at half-mast and funds were collected for the general care and up-keep of the Cumby City Cemetery.

Residents at this year's Memorial Day Service were able to see the newly installed tombstone of Robert H. Cumby, the namesake of the town on the western edge of Hopkins County. The tombstone, that once marked the grave of Cumby, in Sulphur Springs, was restored and placed at the gate of the Cumby Cemetery by Eagle Scout Jared Tremor, as a part of his project.

"It's great to see some as young as Jared interested in the history of our community and willing to lend his hand in making this important piece of history a part of our cemetery," stated one of those in attendance on Monday. "The future of any community lies in the interest of her young people and this proves that Cumby has a bright future.

The Cumby City Cemetery has veterans from all of the major wars and special tribute was paid on this Memorial Day, to those who have so valiantly served their country and the Cumby Community.
