In UIL Journalism

In the recent 2006 District University Interscholastic League Journalism Contest, the Como-Pickton team out-paced their nearest competitor by some 88 points and brought home the Championship honors. Individual team members also brought home a bevy of individual awards and earned the positions to participate in the upcoming Regional competition.
In the News Writing Contest, Pamela Baxley took first place honors, and Alyssa Taylor placed 4th, with Andrea France finishing 5th. In Editorial Writing, Pamela Baxley garnered another first place finish, and Alyssa Taylor took fourth place honors. And, in Feature Writing, Alyssa Taylor took top honors, while Pamela Baxley placed second and Andrea France took the third place position. In Headline Writing, Alyssa Taylor took the first prize and Pamela Baxley finished third in the contest.
In other UIL Competition, the Como-Pickton students excelled, as well. In Social Studies, Ryan Sharp brought home a second place finish, and Micah Walden and Susan Miranda took fourth place in the CX Debate Contest. The Como-Pickton Speech Team earned 118 points and was the runner-up team in the Contest. In LD Debate, Erica Bryant took first place honors, while Lanequia Bryant placed fourth and Meghyn Robinson finished 5th. In Prose Competition, Micah Walden brought home a fourth place, with Andrea France placing fifth and Chesley Walden placing 6th. Madelyn Russell placed second in the Poetry Competion and Sheila Ruckman finished 6th.
In Informative Speaking, Erica Bryant won first place honors, with Micah Walden placing 2nd and Lanequia Bryant placing 6th. And, in the Persuasive Speaking Contest, Susan Miranda placed third, Madelyn Russell 5th, and Kelyn Bain place 6th.
In the Spelling and Vocabulary section of the contest, Ashley Wooten placed first with her individual performance. And, the team of Ashley Wooten, Paula Wygal, Chesley Walden, and Bethanie Stinson, brought home the first place team award. Rachel Cummings, Logan Morris, Johnathan Orjuela and Reece Caddell used their knowlege to bring home the 3rd Place Mathematics Team honors.
Como-Pickton placed third in the entire contest, for the fourth year in a row, and increased their overall point totals by some 126 points, above last year's score.
Representing Como-Pickton in the Regional UIL Contest in Tyler, will be the following: Erica Bryant - 2 events; Madelyn Russell - 2 events; Pamela Baxley - 4 events; Alyssa Taylor - 4 events; Andrea France - 2 events; Micah Walden - 2 events; Susan Miranda; Ryan Sharp; Ashley Wooten; Chesley Walden; Bethanie Stinson; and Paula Wygal.
