Five Seniors Named
Basketball Academic All-State

by: Bobby McDonald

Almost anyone in Hopkins County knows that if you want to see some "fierce" basketball competition, you attend a game at one of the rural schools throughought the county. Well, basketball isn't the only thing that is competitive. Grades, as we all know, are just as important and five senior basketball players from Hopkins County have been named to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Academic All-Stars. Three players from North Hopkins, one from Miller Grove, and another one from Cumby, were named to the designation. In order to attain the designation, players must maintain a grade-point average of 90 or above for seven high school semesters (yes, that includes four seasons of basketball games and practice) and they must be voted  to the All-District designation, either first or second team, in their respective district. Then, they must have taken the ACT or SAT test and scored a high score on that test, in preparation for college.

And, Mary Ugalde, of Cumby High School, is the salutatorian of her graduating class and is the daughter of Arsenio and Dula Ugalde. She has lettered all four years in basketball and volleyball and was recently named Lady Trojan Athlete of the Year at the annual Sports Banquet.

She has also excelled in cross country, tack, and volleyball, as well as serving as a leader during her four years of high school. She plans a career in religion and ministry.
