On this day in history:

1870 - A little town east of Sulphur Springs, known as Bacchus, got their Post Office. The place had first been known as Carroll's Prairie, named after Ferdinand Carroll, an early settler. Today, (since 1894) we know the place as Como, the little town that sits atop lignite coal deposits, and is mighty proud of the Como-Pickton Eagles.

1930 - The headlines read "Youngest Boy Enrolled at SSHS," as thirteen year old Wayne Gee was enrolled as a sophomore. His classes included Latin, English, Spanish, Algebra, and History and was said to be leading his class in scholastics. And, the city was mourning the death of another young man, twenty-one year old, Ranza Rutledge, an employee of the Waits Dairy Farm, who suffered from a relapse of influenza.

1938 - The weather was described as unseasonably warm and a large gathering on people were on the downtown square, as a jury summons had brought folks to the Hopkins County Courthouse. And, Mr. Gafford was encouraging folks to get to his office and purchase their motor vehicle registrations before the "rush" that would be there before the April 1st deadline.

1939 - Dr. T. H. Stephens was welcomed as a new doctor in town. He was moving here from Hallsville, Texas, and would be establishing his offices over Avery and Larner Drug Store. He would be a general practicioner.

1960 - Members of the Women's Forum were actively working on cleaning the new Women's Building on College Street in anticipation of their Grand Opening, that was scheduled on February 9th. Members of the "Kitchen Police" were Mrs. Harvey Whatley and Mrs. Zimmie Bell. And, Dick Carpenter was inviting his friends and neighbors by his location at 105 Glover Avenue, to purchase all of their insurance needs. He was a representative of Great American Insurance of Dallas, and could be reached by calling "TU5-5124."

1999 - The Miller Grove area was mourning the death of 92 year old Clarence Frank Clark, 69 year old Donald Edwin "Bud" Weatherly, and 84 year old James Stripling (They say death comes in "threes.") And, over in Cumby Susie Wetherby and Tara Petty had returned from the 41st Annual Beta Club Convention in Dallas, where they had accompanied eleven other Cumby High School students. Petty and Wetherby had appeared on the program of the state organization.
